What this tool can do

HANEPDF is a free tool for merging, splitting and compressing PDF files right in your browser. There’s nothing to install and no sign-up — no more hunting for freeware and getting it approved for your work computer.

Need to stop halfway? Use “Save project” to save your work to a file, then open it next time to pick up where you left off.

How to use it (3 steps)

  1. Add your filesDrag and drop, or click “Choose files to start”. If you pick several PDFs, they’re automatically lined up as one merged document. The HANETOOL rabbit holding a document
  2. EditDrag pages to reorder them, select unwanted pages and press Delete, and fix sideways pages with the rotate buttons. The HANETOOL rabbit pointing out a tip
  3. Save“Save PDF” exports everything, and “Save selection” exports only the selected pages. To reduce the file size, use “Compress & save”. The HANETOOL rabbit celebrating

When it comes in handy

Combining several invoices or receipts into one file

Add them all at once and you get a single PDF — even a mix of scanned images and PDFs.

When paperwork for accounting is spread across many PDF files, it’s a hassle for both sender and receiver. Add them all at once to get a single PDF, then just check the order and save. Scanned images and PDFs can be mixed freely.

Sharing only the pages that matter

Select the pages and press “Save selection”. The original file isn’t touched.

You have a 100-page document but only need to show three pages — it happens all the time. Select those pages and press “Save selection” to create a PDF with just those pages. The original file isn’t modified. It’s a great way to share part of a contract without handing over anything extra.

When a file is too big to email

Compression can shrink it a lot. Use “Keep text selectable” if you need searchable text, or “Recompress as images” for photo-heavy files.

Scanned PDFs often exceed 10 MB per file. Compression can cut that down dramatically. Choose “Keep text selectable” to keep text searchable and selectable, or “Recompress as images” when the file is mostly photos or scans and only the look matters.

Editing PDFs without installing software

Just open it in a browser — no admin rights or updates needed. It works the same on Windows and Mac.

No admin rights to install software, needing IT approval, or simply not knowing what’s safe to install — plenty of people give up on editing PDFs for these reasons. This tool works just by opening it in a browser, so installation is never an issue. It works the same on Windows and Mac.

There’s nothing to update, either — no more freeware that stops working because it’s out of date when you finally need it.

Keeping files from leaving your computer

Basic editing such as merging, splitting and reordering stays in your browser. Only a few features use our server.

Basic editing — merging, splitting, reordering, rotating and deleting — is all processed inside your browser. Files are never sent to a server, so you can safely handle confidential documents or files containing personal information.

A few features are exceptions. Adding or changing text and stamping page numbers, compression with “Keep text selectable”, Word/PowerPoint conversion, saving with a password, and OCR of scanned PDFs send the file to our server for technical reasons (when stamping text, only the pages with added text are sent). White-out, highlighter and inserted images alone stay entirely in your browser. Files sent to the server are deleted immediately after processing and are never stored or logged, and the screen tells you whenever this happens. For documents that must never leave your computer, choose “Recompress as images” to compress without using the server.

How it compares with other options

There are three main ways to edit PDFs. Each has its strengths, so choose based on your files and setup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I edit a PDF?

Load your file, reorder pages or add text, then save. No install and no sign-up.

Add a PDF and its pages appear as thumbnails. Drag them to reorder, delete pages you don’t need, and rotate any that are sideways. Open a page and choose “+ Text” to type on it, or “+ Image” to place a logo or signature stamp. When it looks right, just press “Save PDF”. The same steps work for any document — invoices, reports or scanned papers.

Can I type text on a PDF?

Yes. Use “+ Text” to place text anywhere and adjust its position, size, color and font.

Yes. In the editor, press “+ Text” to add text, drag it to move it and use the handles to resize it. You can also pick the color and font. That covers adding dates, notes or filling in blanks. Note that this doesn’t fill in interactive PDF form fields — text is placed on top of the page instead. For documents you print and hand in, this works perfectly well.

Can I erase or change existing text in a PDF?

Yes. Hide the area with “+ White-out” and type over it, or use “✏ Edit text” to rewrite it directly.

Cover the area with a white box using “+ White-out”, then type new text on top if needed. It’s simple but reliable. For PDFs that look like a plain Word document on a white background, you can also use “✏ Edit text” to click a word and retype it directly. With complex layouts such as columns or tables, the typeface may change if the original font isn’t available. If you need the original text to be truly gone before sharing, use “🖼 Flatten page”: the text layer is removed so it can no longer be selected or copied.

How do I delete pages from a PDF?

Select the pages, press “🗑 Delete”, then “Save PDF”. Your original file stays untouched.

Click the pages you don’t need in the thumbnail list and press the delete button. You can select several pages at once. Deleting only affects the on-screen list and never touches your original file, so if you make a mistake you can simply load it again. You can also remove pages, reorder the rest and save it all in one go.

How can I split a PDF for free?

Just select pages and press “Save selection”. Free, unlimited, no install or sign-up.

Open your PDF in HANEPDF, select the pages you need and press “Save selection”. It’s free with no usage limits, and there’s no software to install and no sign-up. Splitting happens entirely in your browser, so your file is never uploaded anywhere. Your original file isn’t modified, so it stays intact.

How do I split one PDF into several files?

Repeat “Save selection” with a different range each time — three times for three files.

Select the pages you want and press “Save selection” to save them as a new PDF. To split into three files, repeat this three times — for example pages 1–10 the first time, pages 11–20 the second time, and so on. The “Select all” and “Clear” buttons make selecting ranges quicker.

Do I need to install software to merge PDFs?

No software needed. Add several files and they line up as one; drag to change the order.

No — you can merge PDFs right here with this tool. Add several PDF files at once and they’re automatically lined up as a single document; drag pages to change the order. Freeware often needs installation permission or comes bundled with other software. A browser-based tool is simpler and easier to use on a work computer.

Can I add a logo to every page or number the pages?

Yes. Place an image and tick “All pages” to put it in the same spot on every page. “① Page numbers” numbers them all at once.

Place your logo with “+ Image”, position it (bottom right, for example) and tick “All pages” — it will appear in the same spot on every page. Watermarks work the same way. For page numbers, just press “① Page numbers” to number every page, and choose bottom center, bottom right or bottom left. No more fixing dozens of pages one by one.

Can I save PDF pages as images?

Use “Save as images” to export PNG/JPG. To pull out the embedded images themselves, use “Extract images”.

Yes. Choose “Save as images” to export pages as PNG or JPG. You can save every page or only the selected ones, and pick the resolution — standard for pasting into documents, high for printing. To pull out the original images embedded inside the PDF instead, use “Extract images”.

Can I edit PDFs on an iPad?

Yes. Open this page in your iPad’s browser — no app needed.

Just open this page in Safari or another browser and pick a PDF from the Files app. The larger screen makes reordering pages easier than on an iPhone. For precise positioning of text and images, though, a mouse is more accurate — so for long documents or fine adjustments, a computer will get the job done faster.

Can I split PDFs on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes, with no app to install. For PDFs with many pages, a computer is easier.

Yes. Open this page in your phone’s browser and choose a PDF from the Files app or similar. No app install is needed. On a small screen, selecting pages can be fiddly, so for PDFs with many pages a computer is easier.

How do I split a PDF on a Mac?

The steps are exactly the same as on Windows, and merging or compressing in one go takes fewer steps here.

This tool runs in any Mac browser, so the steps are exactly the same as on Windows. The built-in Preview app can delete and reorder pages, but if you also want to merge several files or compress them in one go, this tool takes fewer steps. It works in both Safari and Chrome.

Why can’t I split a PDF in Adobe Reader?

Acrobat Reader is a viewer with no editing features. Editing requires the paid Acrobat Pro.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is a viewer and doesn’t include editing features such as splitting or deleting pages — those require the paid Acrobat Pro.If you just want to split a PDF for free, a browser-based tool like this one is the easy option.

Is it safe to edit PDFs online?

Merging, splitting, reordering, rotating and deleting pages all happen in your browser — your file isn’t uploaded for these. A few features (listed below) use our server and delete files right away.

The main concern with online PDF sites is what happens to your files. Basic editing in this tool runs entirely in your browser, so your files never reach our server. However, adding or changing text and stamping page numbers, compression with “Keep text selectable”, Word/PowerPoint conversion, password protection and OCR of scans use our server for technical reasons, and files are deleted immediately after processing. The “Before you use” section at the bottom of this page lists which features run where.

Does it cost anything?

No. Every feature is free with no usage limits and no sign-up.

It’s currently free. We may introduce paid plans in the future, but you will never be charged automatically — we’ll announce any change in advance. If you’re comparing it with paid software, try it with your own files first and see the results.

Before you use

Merging, splitting, reordering, rotating, deleting, comparing, Excel conversion, recompressing as images, white-out, highlighter and inserting images are processed in your browser. Adding or changing text and stamping page numbers (only the pages with added text), compression with “Keep text selectable”, Word/PowerPoint conversion, saving with a password and OCR of scans send the file to our server for processing (it is deleted immediately afterwards and never stored or logged). Because any transfer over the internet carries some risk, please use the in-browser features for especially sensitive documents.

We make no guarantee as to the accuracy or completeness of the explanations on this page or the output of this tool. When handling important documents, always check the saved file yourself. Please keep your own backups of your data. For details, see our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
