At a Japanese convenience store (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart, etc.), the most reliable way is to print the JPEG from a USB stick or your phone as an “L-size, borderless” photo print.
What this tool can do
HANEPhoto is a free tool that turns a photo you already have into an ID photo in Japanese standard sizes. No installation or sign-up is needed. Everything happens inside your browser, and your photo is never uploaded to or stored on a server.
-
📏Crops to exact sizes
Just pick a purpose — resume (40×30 mm), My Number Card or Japanese passport (45×35 mm), Japanese driver’s license (30×24 mm), and more — and the photo is cropped to that size (height × width).
-
🎯Face-position guides
Color-coded bands show where the top of the head and the chin should be. Just move the photo to line them up and you get a layout close to the official standard.
-
🖨Print on an L-size sheet
Photos are tiled automatically on an L-size print (89×127 mm): 6 photos at 40×30 mm, or 4 at 45×35 mm. Cutting lines can be added too.

🔍350 dpi output
Saved at a resolution that stays sharp when printed. If your original photo is small, avoid enlarging it too much with the size slider.
Japanese passport photo specs (45 mm high × 35 mm wide, 32–36 mm from the top of the head to the chin, 2–6 mm above the head) are set by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. My Number Card photo specs (45 mm high × 35 mm wide) are set by J-LIS (Japan Agency for Local Authority Information Systems). For other purposes, we show the guidelines commonly used by Japanese photo studios. These sizes are for Japanese documents; other countries’ requirements are not included.
How to use it (4 steps)
- Load a photoSmartphone photos work fine. The best photos face the camera, are taken in a bright place, and have a plain wall behind you.
- Choose a sizeWhen you choose a purpose, the frame shape and guide positions change.
- Line up the faceDrag the photo to move it and use the slider to resize it. It’s right when the top of the head is in the blue band and the chin is in the yellow band.
- SaveSave a single photo or a tiled L-size sheet. Print the tiled JPEG as “L-size, borderless” at a convenience store in Japan and you get almost the same result as a photo shop.
When it comes in handy
No time to visit a photo booth
Make one from a smartphone photo and print it at a convenience store.
Stand in front of a white wall and have someone take a straight-on photo from the chest up. Selfies tend to distort the face, so it looks better if someone takes it from a little farther away or uses zoom. Then fit it to the size here and print it as an L-size photo.
Using the same photo in another size
Just switch the size to make another version from the same photo.
After making a resume photo, switch the size to “My Number Card” and the frame and guides change. Re-align and save, and one photo covers several purposes.
Things in the background
First replace the background with white or light blue in HANECut (background remover), then load it here.
My Number Card and passport photos must have a plain background. Photos showing patterned curtains or furniture may be rejected. Replace just the background with white in HANECut, save it, and load it here.
Worried the photo might be rejected
This tool handles size and face position, but check the photo requirements of the office you are submitting to.
This tool can only adjust the size and the face position. Requirements such as being taken within the last 6 months, no hat, facing forward, eyes not covered, no shadows and a plain background depend on the photo itself. Passport and My Number Card photos are checked strictly, so read the official instructions carefully before using one.
This tool crops photos to the specified size. It does not guarantee that the photo will be accepted. The sizes shown are based on information published by each organization, but always check the latest requirements of the office you are submitting to. We accept no liability for any loss arising from a photo made with this tool being rejected. See our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy for details.
