What this tool can do
HANECut is a free tool that removes photo backgrounds automatically. No installation or sign-up is needed. Even the AI processing happens inside your browser, and your photos are never uploaded to or stored on a server.

🔒Photos never leave your device
Most background removal services upload your photo to their servers. This tool does all the work inside your browser, so you can use it even for photos that must not leave your company.

♾️No limits on count or resolution
Process as many photos as you like, at any size. The work runs on your own computer, so there is no reason for us to limit it.

🎨Replace the background
Besides transparency, you can use white, light gray or light blue (for ID photos). You can also use a blurred version of the original photo as the background.

🪄Adjustable edges
If some of the old background color remains along the edges, a slider lets you trim the cutout slightly inward. If part of the subject is missing, you can expand it instead.
The AI model is downloaded the first time only: about 6 MB for “Fast” and about 43 MB for “Best quality”. Once loaded it stays in your browser, so later runs start right away. Browsers with WebGPU support (recent Chrome, Edge, etc.) process even faster.
How to use it (3 steps)
- Load photosYou can add several at once. Loaded photos are listed on the right.
- Remove the background“Remove background” processes the selected photo. “Process all” handles every photo.
- Choose a background and saveKeep it transparent and save as PNG, or add white or a color and save as JPEG too.
When it comes in handy
Product photos on a white background
Use “Process all”, set the background to white, and save.
Many online marketplaces require product images on a white background. Even if the photos were taken in different places, cutting them out and adding white makes them look consistent. If the old background color remains on the edges, set “Cutout size” to around −5 to −15.
A plain background for ID photos
Set the background to “White” or “Light blue”, save, and load it into HANEPhoto (ID photo maker).
Japanese My Number Card and passport photos require a plain background. Even if furniture shows up behind you in a photo taken at home, you can replace it with a plain color here. Other requirements, such as no shadows, depend on the photo itself, so check the official instructions.
Portraits for documents and slides
Save as a transparent PNG and it won’t show a rectangular box when pasted into PowerPoint.
Keep the background set to “Transparent (PNG)” when saving. Setting “Edge softness” to 1–2 makes the edges look less harsh once pasted.
When the cutout isn’t clean
Switch to “Best quality”. If that still doesn’t work, retaking the photo is the quickest fix.
“Fast” works for people only. Products, small objects and animals need “Best quality”. With either model, blurry photos, dark photos, or photos where the subject and background are nearly the same color will have rough edges. The AI tells things apart by color and shape, so if the boundary is hard for a human to see, it is hard for the AI too.
