What this tool can do
HANEText is a free character counter that also cleans up your text: remove unwanted spaces and line breaks, convert full-width and half-width characters, and more. No install and no sign-up required. Everything runs inside your browser, so your text is never sent to or stored on a server.
-
🔢Live counting as you type
See characters with and without spaces, words, lines, paragraphs and more, updated as you type. Set a limit to see how many characters you have left.
-
🔄Full-width / half-width conversion
Japanese text often mixes full-width (wide) and half-width (narrow) letters, digits and katakana. Convert all of them, or only letters & digits, or only katakana — handy for normalizing contact lists and address data.
-
🧹Remove extra spaces and line breaks
Clean up leading/trailing spaces, repeated spaces and empty lines with one click. Ideal for text copied from PDFs and web pages.
-
🖍️Find and replace all
Search for a word and every match is highlighted in yellow. Searches ignore case and full-width/half-width differences, so mixed spellings are found too. Switch to "Replace" to replace matches one at a time or all at once.
-
📋Remove duplicates and sort lines
Delete repeated lines in one go. Combine with sorting and line numbering to tidy up lists in seconds.
After a conversion, "↩ Undo" (Ctrl+Z) takes you back one step. Went too far? "↪ Redo" (Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z) moves forward again. Typing is included in the history too, so you can always get back to where you were, even after several conversions. On Mac, use ⌘Z / ⇧⌘Z.
How to use it (3 steps)
-
Paste your textPaste text into the box. The character count and other stats appear on the right right away.
-
Press an action buttonPress the button for what you want, such as "Remove empty lines" or "Full → half-width". The text box updates instantly. There are lots of buttons, so you can type "space", "duplicate" or "sort" in the search box to narrow them down. To change specific words only, use "Find & replace" below the text box ("Find" just shows matches; "Replace" rewrites them).
-
Copy or savePress "Copy" below the text box and paste wherever you need it, or "Save as .txt" to download a file.
When it comes in handy
Text copied from a PDF or website is a mess
"Remove line breaks" or "Collapse multiple empty lines" tidies it up.
Text copied from a PDF often has a line break at the end of every visual line, so it wraps awkwardly when pasted into a document. Use "Remove line breaks" to join it into one line, then add breaks back only where you need them. If spaces remain at the start of lines, also use "Trim spaces on each line".
Normalizing lists and addresses (Japanese data)
"Full → half-width (letters & digits)" normalizes only the digits and letters and leaves Japanese text untouched.
When several people enter data on Japanese systems, phone numbers and street numbers often end up as a mix of full-width (wide) and normal half-width characters, which breaks sorting and searching. Converting just the letters and digits to half-width fixes this while leaving the Japanese text as is. If a form needs full-width characters, use "Half → full-width (letters & digits)" instead.
If you work with the cleaned data as CSV, our CSV editor lets you edit it without losing leading zeros.
Removing duplicate entries
Press "Remove duplicate lines" and only the first of each identical line is kept.
Great for cleaning up lists of email addresses or product codes where the same value appears many times. Run "Trim spaces on each line" first so lines that look the same but differ only in spaces are merged reliably.
Changing a specific word throughout a document
Use the box below the text area and switch between "Find" and "Replace". Type in the "Find" field and every match is highlighted in yellow.
To just locate matches, use "Find". Press "↓ Next" and the current match turns orange and scrolls into view. The text is not changed. Pressing Enter repeatedly in the find field also moves to the next match.
To make changes, switch to "Replace". Enter the replacement, then press "Replace" to change only the orange match, or "Replace all" to change every match. Useful when a company name, contact person or product name changes and appears many times in a document. Leave "Replace with" blank to delete the word.
Searches ignore upper/lower case and full-width/half-width differences. "310,000" also finds full-width "310,000", and katakana "サンプル" also finds half-width "サンプル". No need to normalize mixed text first. To match only the exact form you typed, tick "Exact match". Spaces are the one exception: full-width and half-width spaces are treated as different, because people often want to find the full-width spaces used for indentation in Japanese text. The search looks for the exact sequence you type; regular expressions and wildcards are not supported.
To undo a replacement, use "↩ Undo" (Ctrl+Z) one step at a time. A "Replace all" is undone in a single step.
Writing to a character limit
Enter a number in "Character limit check" on the right to see how many characters are left or over.
Useful for ad copy, product descriptions, social media posts, meta descriptions and anything else with a character limit. Platforms differ on whether spaces count, so you can switch how characters are counted.
