Which resolution (dpi)?
  • 72 … The reference for Illustrator, InDesign and PDF. These treat 1 point as 1 pixel, so A4 is 595 × 842 px.
  • 96 … The reference for Windows displays and CSS. Use this when thinking about actual size on web pages.
  • 350 … The standard for images sent to a print shop in Japan (300 dpi is common elsewhere). Create photo and flyer artwork at this resolution.
When sending artwork to a printer, it is common to add about 3 mm (1/8 in) of bleed around the edges.

When it comes in handy

Understanding Japanese property sizes (tsubo, tatami mats)

Choose "Area" to see square meters, square feet, tsubo, jo (tatami mats) and more side by side.

In Japan, property listings use square meters, people talk about land in tsubo, and room sizes are given in jo — the number of tatami mats. One tsubo is about 3.306 m² (35.6 sq ft), and one tatami mat (Chukyo-ma size) is half of that. Seeing every unit at once makes it easy to compare listings, especially if you are renting or buying in Japan.

Converting between imperial and metric

Inches, feet, pounds, gallons, Fahrenheit and other US customary / imperial units are all supported.

Specs, recipes and documents often mix inches and pounds with metric. Enter a number and pick the category to get the other system instantly. Fahrenheit (℉) isn't a simple multiplication, so it is easy to get wrong — this tool converts it correctly.

Checking paper and print sizes

The "Paper size chart" below the converter lists A and B series, postcards, business cards, envelopes, photo prints and US Letter/Legal in millimeters, inches and pixels.

Pick a resolution to see the pixel size at that dpi: 96 dpi for web pages, 300–350 dpi for print. The chart is always available regardless of the selected category.

Checking file and disk sizes

"Data size" handles both MB/GB (powers of 1000) and MiB/GiB (powers of 1024).

This difference is why a hard drive's advertised capacity doesn't match what your computer shows. You can see both side by side.
