Screen Recorder & Video Editor

Record your computer screen as a video. You can also skip recording and use just the editor. Load a video shot on your phone or made in other software to trim the start and end, hide parts you don't want shown, or zoom in on details. Videos shot on a phone, made in other software, or recorded and saved with this tool can all be loaded (as long as your computer can play the format).

What to record
Audio
In the sharing dialog your browser shows next, turn on the switch below. Also share system audio If it stays off, no system audio is recorded. If you choose “Window,” system audio can't be captured due to a browser limitation.
Recording happens entirely on your computer — neither video nor audio is sent to a server. Long recordings use a lot of memory, so for anything over 30 minutes we recommend recording in parts.

What this tool does

HANERec is a free tool that records your computer screen as a video and lets you do simple edits right away. No install or sign-up required. You can also use it purely as a video editor, without recording. Load a video you already have and trim, hide or zoom in right away. Recording and editing all happen inside your browser, and video and audio are never sent to or stored on a server.

Boxes can be moved or resized (from the bottom-right corner) even after placing them. You can also pause and resume while recording, and save the current frame as a PNG snapshot.

How to use it (3 steps)

  1. RecordChoose what to record and the quality on the right, then click “Start recording.” Your browser will ask what to share — pick the screen or window you want. Click “Stop” when you're done.
▶ If you only want to edit, skip this step. Choose a video file under “Edit a video without recording” (or drag it onto the page) and go straight to the next step.

When it comes in handy

Making a how-to video

Record the screen and your microphone together to make a narrated how-to video on the spot.

“Click here on this screen” comes across far better in a video than in text or screenshots. Record how to use an app, how to enter data into a system, or how to change a setting once, and you'll never have to repeat the explanation. Record just one window and nothing unrelated will show up.

Fumbles at the start and end can be removed afterwards with “Trim the start and end.” Showing the mouse cursor makes it easier to see where you're clicking.

Sharing a video with customer names or amounts hidden

Use “Hide parts you don't want shown” to apply a mosaic or black-out to that area, for a time range you choose.

Business system screens often show information that can't leave the company, such as customer names, addresses and amounts. Just drag over the area on the video to apply a mosaic, blur, black-out or white-out.

If the screen changes and the position moves, you can place multiple boxes, each with its own time range — for example, “this spot from 0 to 8 seconds, another spot from 9 to 20 seconds.” You can check the hidden areas on screen before exporting, so nothing gets missed.

Note that masks are burned into the exported video and can't be undone later. If you want to keep the original, save it before editing.

Making small text or buttons easier to see

Use “Zoom in on part of the video” to choose an area and when to enlarge it. The zoom eases in and out smoothly.

When you record the entire screen, text in input fields or small buttons may be unreadable on the viewer's screen. Enlarging that area for the few seconds you're explaining it makes it clear where to look. Drag over the area on the video, then enter the start and end seconds in the list.

A sudden jump leaves viewers unsure where they are, so zooming in and back out changes size gradually. You can change the transition time in the “Ease” field (default 0.6 seconds; set it to 0 to switch instantly).

You can add as many zooms as you like — for example, “this input field from 3 to 7 seconds, the top-right button from 12 to 16 seconds.” Move a box by dragging it, or resize it from the bottom-right corner. To see the actual motion, click “▶ Preview” in the list or play the video (while paused, the view returns to unzoomed so boxes are easy to adjust).

The more you enlarge an area, the blurrier it gets. Recording at a higher “Quality” keeps text sharper when zoomed in.

When combined with “Crop the edges,” zooming happens only within the cropped area. Playback previews also zoom only inside the crop box, so you see exactly what will be exported. If a zoom area sticks out of the crop, a warning appears in the list (it still works — the zoom is shifted to fit inside).

Recording a bug to report it

Capture the exact steps leading up to the problem on video.

Symptoms like “the screen freezes sometimes” or “an error appears when I do this” are hard to explain in words. Recording what actually happens communicates the situation accurately and cuts down the back-and-forth. Even if you recorded too much, you can cut out just the few dozen seconds that matter. If you only need the error screen, “Save a snapshot” works too.

Editing a video you already have, without recording

Choose a video file under “Edit a video without recording,” or drag the video onto the page. No recording needed at all.

This tool works as a standalone video editor. Videos from your phone or digital camera, made in other software, or saved earlier with this tool can all be loaded, as long as your computer can play the format. Once loaded, you get exactly the same tools as right after recording: trim the start and end, crop the edges, hide areas, and zoom in for set seconds.

If you just want to blur a bit of a video before sending it, or cut the 30 seconds you need out of a long video, there's no need to install editing software. Open this page in your browser, pick the video, and you're done.

Loaded videos are never sent to a server; everything is processed on your computer. Long or large videos use a lot of memory, so we recommend up to about 10 minutes.

Editing again after saving

Choose the saved video under “Edit a video without recording” to redo trimming or masking.

A recording exists only while this page is open — it disappears if you close the page or navigate away, so save it first. To edit it later, just choose the saved video file and edit it as if you had just recorded it.

Note that masks and zooms are burned into the exported video and can't be removed from it afterwards. If you might want to redo them, keep a copy of the unedited video too.

System audio isn't being recorded

Did you share a “Window”? System audio can only be recorded when you share your “Entire screen” or a “Browser tab.”

First, check that “Include system audio” is ticked in the settings on the right. When you start recording with it ticked, the browser shows a dialog for choosing what to share. It has an “Also share system audio” switch (wording may vary by browser) — turn it on to record system audio. If it's left off, no sound is captured, and this tool lets you know before recording starts.

However, if you share a “Window,” system audio can't be captured even with the switch on. This is a browser limitation that this tool can't change. To record a specific app's sound, choose “Entire screen.” For just your voice, use “Include microphone (your voice)” on the right.

Exporting is slow or the file is too large

Exporting re-creates the video while playing it, so it takes about as long as the trimmed length.

For example, exporting 5 minutes of video takes about 5 minutes. Trimming to just the part you need first makes it finish faster. Don't close the page or navigate away while exporting.

If file size is a concern, setting Quality to “Light” and Frame rate to “15 fps” shrinks it considerably. For text-heavy screens, a lower frame rate doesn't hurt readability. Long recordings use a lot of memory, so for anything over 30 minutes we recommend recording in parts.

Recording meetings or training sessions

You can record the screen together with system audio.

You can keep a record of meetings with screen sharing or online training sessions. Get consent from everyone taking part before you record. Recording or sharing other people's video or words without permission may infringe their rights.

Before you use it

We do not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the explanations on this page or how this tool behaves. Support for screen recording and exporting varies by browser (we recommend the latest Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer; Safari on iPhone and iPad does not support screen recording). Depending on your computer's performance and the recording length, recording may stop midway, the video may glitch, or exporting may fail. For important recordings, do a short test first. Masks (mosaic, blur, fill) are burned into the exported video, but we do not guarantee that nothing is missed or misaligned. Always check the exported video yourself before sharing it with anyone. Also, when recording other people's video, audio or copyrighted works, always get their consent first and stay within the bounds of their rights. We accept no liability for damages arising from how you handle recorded or edited content. For details, see our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
