When it comes in handy
When a video someone sent won't play in your browser
Convert old formats like WMV, AVI or FLV to MP4 and they will play on any computer.
No modern browser can play Windows Media (WMV) files, and some video editors cannot import them either. Once converted to MP4, the video opens on computers, phones and tablets alike, and you can trim it or blur parts of it in HANERec.
When iPhone photos won't open on Windows
Convert HEIC to JPG and the photos open on any computer.
By default, iPhones save photos in the HEIC format. The files are smaller, but Windows PCs and older software often cannot open them. Converting to JPEG means no more trouble inserting them into documents or sending them by email. If you have many photos, add them all and convert them in one go.
When you only need the audio from a meeting recording
Add the video and choose "MP3 (extract audio)" to get an audio-only file.
Recordings are large, and you don't need the picture just to listen again. As an MP3 the file can be dozens of times smaller and much easier to carry around and share. Audio-only files are often easier to hand to transcription services, too.
When you want to share how-to steps quickly
Convert a short recording to a GIF and paste it straight into documents or chat.
GIFs play automatically without a play button, which makes them great for showing steps. They get large quickly, though, so we recommend keeping them to about 10–20 seconds. Press "✂ Trim (optional)" under the file name to pick just the part you want while playing it. GIFs have no sound.
Conversion runs on your own computer or phone, so processing time and the maximum file size depend on your device. Converting video can take several times the length of the video. Converting may slightly change picture or sound quality. Your original files are not modified, but please keep a copy of important files before converting. Converting and distributing videos, music or images owned by others may infringe copyright. For details, see our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
